What are Vitamins and Minerals?

Vitamins are crucial for the production of energy, immune system health, blood clotting, as well as other important processes. On the other hand, minerals are crucial for a number of functions, including growth, bone health, fluid balance, and others. Vitamins and minerals are referred to as “micronutrients” in general.

Since the human body, for the most part, is unable to produce vitamins and minerals, humans must get micronutrients from food. They are also referred to as vital nutrients for this reason. Vitamins are organic compounds produced by both plants and animals which can be broken down by air, acid, or heat. On the other hand, minerals cannot be broken, are inorganic, found in soil or water. When you eat, you take in the minerals plants and animals created and vitamins that they absorbed.

How to use Vitamins and Minerals?

Water soluble Vitamins (C and the B’s) can be taken every day as water dissolves them and your body doesn’t store them. Consume them with or without food. However B12 being an exception, you’ll absorb it better with a meal.

Fat soluble Vitamins (A, D, E, and K) need to go with fat (not a lot of fat or any saturated fat) from a meal for your body to absorb and utilize them. Go for a healthy plant-based fat you find in foods like avocado or nut.

As for minerals, its large doses can compete with each other to be absorbed by the body. Therefore, do not use calcium, zinc, or magnesium supplements at the same time. Moreover, these three minerals are easier on your stomach when you take them with food. Do not take any individual mineral at the same time.
